On Friday, November 3, China General Chamber of Commerce–USA (CGCC) hosted its fifth 2017 “Lunch & Learn” event of “Understanding Labor and Safety Issues in the US & Get Prepared for Natural Disasters and Emergencies” at the CGCC New York office. Trent Sutton, Office Managing Shareholder of Littler's Rochester, New York office, and Xiong Huan, Associate of Littler’s New York office shared their expertise in U.S. labor and workplace safety issues.
Against the backdrop of a series of hurricanes and other natural disasters in the United States earlier this year, Mr. Trent Sutton discussed labor issues ranging from payment, military leave, evacuation and discipline in emergencies, safety response and recovery work, and leaves of absence, which are highly relevant to business owners and HR managers, and introduced the best solutions for companies during natural disasters.
Ms. Xiong Huan focused on the issue of workplace violence in her presentation, and started with an overview of the definition, types and examples of workplace violence, where she pointed out that although workplace violence incidents are relatively rare, serious actions should be taken by employers to prevent and minimize violence in workplace and its tragic consequences. She then followed up the topic by highlighting key laws and regulations on federal, state and city levels in the US, and shed lights on measures of preventing and reducing violence in the workplace.
