As the world continues to slowly rebound from the economic challenges and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, CGCC’s 2021 Annual Business Survey Report highlighted that Chinese companies are more optimistic about the overall U.S. operating and economic environment as well as the bilateral relationship. How have the events of the past year affected companies long-term cross-border trade and investment efforts (in China and the U.S.)? What trends should we expect in the postpandemic business world?

    David Berge
    Senior Vice President, Moody's Investors Service

    David Berge, a Senior Vice President in Moody’s Corporate Finance Group, covers a portfolio of large, primarily investment grade manufacturing companies. Prior to this, David covered extensive portfolios in the services, transportation, and aerospace/defense sectors. Before joining Moody’s in July 2002, David worked for Deutsche VerkehrsBank AG, where he was a capital markets analyst in their corporate advisory group involved in lending to the transportation sector.

    David is a CFA charterholder and a member of the CFA Institute and the New York Society of Security Analysts, Inc. David has an MBA from Columbia Business School and a B.S. from the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

    Matthew Davis
    Senior Vice President, Starr Marine - A Member of Starr Companies

    Matthew Davis has been the Senior Vice President, Profit Center Manager for Starr Marine since March 2019. He is on the Board of Directors of Starr International Seguros Generales S.A., Starr’s insurance company subsidiary in Chile. Matthew is also on the Board of Trustees for The Seaman’s Church Institute and the Finance Committee of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters. Matthew first joined Starr over 24 years ago.

    Prior to his current role, Matthew held various positions at Starr Marine with increasing responsibility, including U.S. Business Development, Marine Manager Easter Zone and New York Marine Manager.

    Matthew holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester.

    Mengze LIU
    General Manager, COFCO Food Import Company

    Mengze (Paul) Liu is General Manager of COFCO Food Import Company. He served as president of COFCO (USA) Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of COFCO Corporation, from 2009 to 2016.

    Mr. Liu worked for COFCO International in Canada and Europe as regional head and Chief Risk Officer between 2016 and 2018. COFCO International is COFCO Corporation’s platform for international grain business.

    Mr. Liu was vice general manager of COFCO oilseeds processing division from 2004 to 2009, where he was responsible for procurement of feedstock for COFCO’s oilseed processing plants.

    Between 1999 and 2004, he was assigned by COFCO to work in Hong Kong as managing director of China Foods Trading Ltd, a COFCO subsidiary in Hong Kong for trading of agricultural commodities. Mr. Liu joined COFCO in 1994 as a corn trader in China National Maize Export Company, a joint venture of COFCO and other major corn-growing provinces in China. He graduated from University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing China in 1985 with Bachelor degree and in 2002 MBA from University of South Australia. He is married and has a daughter graduated from law school in the UK.

    Executive Vice President of COSCO SHIPPING (North America) and COSCO SHIPPING Lines (North America)

    Mr. Paul Nazzaro holds the position of Executive Vice President of COSCO SHIPPING (North America) and COSCO SHIPPING Lines (North America). Previously, he was a founding member of the senior management team for 16 years with China Shipping (North America) Holdings in the role of Vice President, with a varied scope of responsibilities including liner network expansion internationally, Latin America trade supervision, regulatory compliance, equipment control, customer services, sales, marketing and cost control. Mr. Nazzaro studied business administration at the CUNY and the University of Richmond. With an international and domestic profession spanning 30 years, he has held pivotal positions in a diverse segment of the international logistics and supply chain sector.

    Managing Director, Global Corporate Bank, J.P. Morgan

    Lu is a Managing Director in the Corporate and Investment Bank providing corporate banking relationship coverage for the North American business of large foreign multinational companies. She spearheads the overall effort on Greater China headquartered companies at the Global Corporate Bank in North America, focusing on a number of sectors including TMT, transportation/shipping, natural resources, consumer, healthcare, and other diversified industries.

    Lu has been with J.P. Morgan for more than 19 years. Before joining the Global Corporate Bank in New York, Lu was with J.P. Morgan’s Private Bank in Hong Kong from 2008-2010 covering ultra high net worth clients in Greater China. Prior to that, she worked at the Investment Bank in New York City, and began her career with the firm’s investment banking analyst program.

    Lu has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and International Relations from Colgate University. She is fluent in English and Chinese.
