
CGCC Hosts Seminar with Covington & Burling on CFIUS Regulation
September 25, 2013 -- CGCC co-hosted the discussion panel with leading legal firm Covington & Burling LLP, titled with “U.S. Regulatory and Institutional Environment for Chinese Foreign Direct Investment” at Covington’s D.C. office. Over a hundred honorable guests, including members of CGCC, formal and current senior officials of U.S. foreign investment regulatory and promotional bodies, executives from leading U.S. firms attended this important event. And major media from U.S. and China also participated the afternoon's meeting. President of CGCC, Mr. Yuan Ning and Partner of Covington & Burling, Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat gave their welcoming notes to initiate the seminar.
Before the panel discussions, the Assistant Secretary of Treasury for International Markets and Development, Ms. Marisa Lago, as the keynote speaker, delivered a very important speech . In her speech, she expressed the welcoming and opening attitude of the U.S. market and government to Chinese investment, and the willing of further understanding and cooperation between the two great nations. Furthermore, she pointed out that the U.S. foreign investment regulatory body will regard Chinese investors on disinterested bases. And Ms. Lago also answered questions raised by audiences.
The panel was divided into two sessions, focusing on the trend and opportunities of Chinese investment in the U.S. and the planning for CFIUS, U.S. regulatory and institutional considerations for Chinese investment respectively. Panelists from government sectors, academia, private sectors, and professional services gave their observation, experience and opinions from their unique perspectives to the audiences. During the first session, panelists analyzed the features of the fast growing of Chinese investment, expressed their optimistic expectation for the future and projected some potential concerns in the future. And in the following session, speakers dissected the U.S. foreign investment regulatory institution and the existing political issues and gave their heuristics for preparing the foreign investment regulatory filling and coping with the U.S. political disputes.
On the same day, Covington also held a welcoming luncheon for CGCC’s board members. CGCC’s board members and senior partners of Covington & Burling joined the luncheon together.
