New York, NY - On April 28th, 2023, China General Chamber of Commerce-USA (CGCC) and Bank of China U.S.A. co-hosted “A Special Evening Celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month” in honor of AAPI month.

Celebrating the achievements of extraordinary Asian-Americans from a variety of industries, the event’s featured keynote speaker was Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Gold Medalist in Freeskiing and fashion icon Eileen GU.
Introduced by Ambassador Ping HUANG, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in New York, during her keynote, GU shared her own experiences with discrimination, how the Asian-American and Pacific Island community were able to uplift her during these challenging times, “In the wake of hate, in the face of discrimination and against all inequality, we have to stand up for ourselves, we have to stand up for those that look like us, our Asian, Asian-American and Pacific Islander friends and family. We also have to stand up for people who don’t look like us,” said GU.

“What’s important now more than ever is dialogue, it's communication, it’s a sense of cultural tolerance, and the ability to learn and understand from one another. And for me, that’s what comes through the mode of free skiing,” expressed GU.
“I encourage everyone in this room and for all young people especially to use our voices, to activate through social media, to activate through platforms, to use the voices and the power we have to stand up for ourselves and others to create the positive change we want to be.”

Following GU’s remarks was a panel discussion surrounding the Asian-American experience. Moderated by Sherry Qu, Executive Director of CGCC, panelists included: Candy NIP, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York, Li Chung (Sandi) Pei, Co-founder of PEI architects, and Bhaswar (Joy) Chatterjee, Managing Director, Co-Head Americas, Credit Syndicate at Natixis.

The event concluded with a special performance by talented musicians from The Juilliard School.
