Cathay General Bancorp Rings NASDAQ Closing Bell in Celebration of Cathay Bank's 50th Anniversary
Cathay General Bancorp, the holding company of Cathay Bank, rang the closing bell at the NASDAQ Stock Market on Friday, April 20th, in celebration of the Bank’s 50th anniversary. Mr. Dunson Cheng, Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer, and President, and Mr. Peter Wu, Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer, were in attendance, together with other members of the Board of Directors. They were joined by Mr. Pin Tai, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Eastern Regions, Ms. Veronica Tsang, Senior Vice President and Branch Administrator, Eastern Regions.
Cathay Bank commenced business in Los Angeles’ Chinatown in 1962 and their mission was to provide personal and commercial banking services to the Chinese-American community. In 1990, Cathay General Bancorp became the first publicly-traded Chinese-American bank holding company when its shares were listed and began trading on NASDAQ under the trading symbol “CATY”.
In addition to the ringing of the NASDAQ closing bell, Cathay Bank’s 50th anniversary celebrations have been in full swing. The year kicked off with a donation of 80 trees to Los Angeles Chinatown which were planted along North Hill Street to beautify Chinatown and to support the bank’s stance on eco- friendliness. Cathay Bank also served as Title Sponsor of The American Red Cross, San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter for their annual fundraising gala and worked with a major publication to produce a “New Immigrant Handbook” aimed at helping new immigrants. A photo exhibition in their Los Angeles Chinatown branch will debut sometime in May, highlighting the bank’s history, as well as the progress and development of the local communities.
