CGCC Statement to Community Members

Written by Hallie Carmen | April 3, 2025

New York, NY - April 4th, 2025, The China General Chamber of Commerce -USA(CGCC) notes that on April 2nd, President Donald Trump issued an executive order imposing an additional 34% tariff on Chinese imports, raising the total rate up to 54% since 2025. As the largest nonprofit organization representing Chinese enterprises in the United States, CGCC believes it has a responsibility to offer perspective on developments that directly impact the commercial and economic interests of its members.

Over the past 20 years, The China General Chamber of Commerce – USA (CGCC), an independent, not-for-profit, non-partisan, non-governmental chamber of commerce serving about a thousand U.S. and Chinese companies in the U.S., committed to creating value, generating economic growth, and fostering cooperation between the U.S. and Chinese business communities. As of July 2024, CGCC’s Chinese member companies have cumulatively invested over $140 billion, directly employing more than 230,000 people and indirectly support over one million American jobs.

In light of the recent tariff measures, CGCC wishes to emphasize that trade policy decisions can have far-reaching implications. Extensive research suggests that while tariffs are one tool in addressing trade concerns, they may not fully resolve underlying structural issues and can lead to complex outcomes for global supply chains and economic stability. CGCC remains of the view that sustained, constructive dialogue is a more effective and forward-looking approach to promoting long-term trade equilibrium and mutual economic benefit.

Recognizing the potential for heightened uncertainty and operational challenges among our member companies, CGCC reaffirms its commitment to supporting this business community during this period of change. As member service remains our core mission and the sustained prosperity of the U.S.-China business community continues to be our guiding vision, CGCC will continue to leverage its extensive resources, expertise, and networks to assist member companies to navigate this evolving landscape and continue contributing to a vibrant and resilient commercial partnership between our two nations.
