A Brief Introduction to Huai’an
Located in the north of Yangtze River Delta, Huai’an, is the hometown of the great man of our times Zhou Enlai. Covering an area of 10,100 square kilometers, Huai’an administers four counties and four districts, and has a population of 5.40 million, of which 1.5 million are in the city proper of 150 square kilometres.
A City Famous for its Historical & Cultural Associations. Set up as a county in Qin Dynasty, Huai’an has a history of over 2,200 years. During Ming and Qing Dynasties, Huai’an shared the reputation of Four Metropolises along the Grand Canal together with Yangzhou, Suzhou and Hangzhou. Huai’an is home of numerous celebrities. It’s not only the hometown of Mr. Zhou Enlai, but also home of the famous strategist Hanxin, the great author Wu Cheng’en, etc. Many famous books are also written in Huai’an, namely one of four famous classic works the Journey to the West, one of the four classic traditional Chinese medical works Doctrine of Epidemic Febrile Disease, etc. Huaiyang Cuisine, with the flavour spreading all over the world, is also originated from this city, and there are more than 1,300 dishes existing at present.
A City Possessed with Plentiful Products and Beautiful Scenery. Huai’an combines two Great Plains of Jianghuai and Huanghuai, with variegated waters. Four lakes of Hongze Lake, Gaoyou Lake, Baima Lake and Baoying Lake are located within its territory. On its vast plain, Huai’an is endowed with fertile land, abundant food and woods. It is a famous national production, processing and marketing base for green and pollution-free farm and sideline products. Huai’an also has plenty of nonmetallic resources, among which, the proven reserve of attapugite accounts for 70% of the whole country, and the reserve of rock salt reaches 130 billion tons, entitling the city as Salt Capital of China.
An Important Transport Hub with Distinctive Geographical Advantages. Located in crisscrossing area of the Grand Canal and Huaihe River, Huai’an enjoys an important geographical location. During Ming and Qing Dynasties, Huai’an used to be the canal transportation hinge and the center of salt shipment. At present, five expressways such as Jinhu (Beijing-Shanghai) crisscross here, inland river channels lead to all directions and Xinchang (Xinyi-Changxin) Railway pass through the whole territory of Huai’an. 15 domestic air routes connecting the large and medium cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong etc. has been launched in Lianshui Airport of Huai’an.
A City with a Complete Range of Industries and Excellent Environment of Investment. Having more than 10,000 industrial enterprises of various kinds, five key traditional industries of chemicals, machinery, textile, metallurgy and tobacco have been promoted rapidly. The city has already formed four pillar industries of special steel, salt chemicals, IT and food processing, and also two strategic emerging industries of high-end equipment and new energy automobile & spare parts manufacturing. At present, National-level Economic and Technological Development Zone, Export Processing Zone, Business Incubator for Overseas Chinese, 7 provincial-level Specially Industrial Park, and 7 provincial-level Logistics Base have been established in Huai’an. And there are in total six universities and colleges and 43 secondary vocational schools with 190 thousand registered students.

Huai’an has established trade relations with many counties and regions such as Japan, U.S.A, EU, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc. Now, over 20 world-famous companies and corporations such as Foxconn Science & Technology Group, Taiwan Glass Group, Hankook Tires Company has invested in Huai’an. Huai’an has also established international sister-city relationships with 12 cities of 11 countries including France, Ecuador, Belarus, U.S.A., South Korea, Italy, Japan, Russia, Germany, Poland and Canada.
