NEW YORK, October 15, 2015 – China General Chamber of Commerce – U.S.A. (CGCC) hosted a luncheon with LEADERS Magazine and C.V. Starr & Co. Inc., featuring Mr. Maurice R. Greenberg, the Chairman and CEO of C.V. Starr & Co. Inc. Zhou Shanqing, the Commercial Counselor of PRC in New York, David Schner, President & Executive Editor of LEADERS Magazine, Xu Chen, CGCC Chairman, President & CEO of Bank of China USA, Rick Niu, President & CEO of Starr Strategic Partners, and more than 20 CGCC members attended this luncheon.
After the introductory remarks by Chairman Xu, Mr. Greenberg started his speech by recognizing the momentum of the growing Chinese foreign direct investment in the U.S. during the past five years. He said, “I am delighted to see Chinese companies of various sizes to expand their business in the United States. We will do what we can to encourage and assist this development in any possible way.” Based on his recent interactions with China, Mr. Greenberg expects more capital inflow from China in areas of infrastructure and agriculture.
During the open discussion, attendees exchanged opinions and comments on a number of current issues, including the recently-reached agreement on Trans-Pacific Partnership by 12 nations, Chinese stock market fluctuations and the transitioning economy, RMB internationalization, and China-U.S. bilateral investment treaties negotiation.
Mr. Greenberg is the world-wide business leader in finance and insurance industries, and has maintained long-time intimate relations with Chinese business, government, and society. He retired as Chairman and CEO of American International Group (AIG) in March 2005. AIG was created by C.V. Starr & Co., Inc. Under his leadership, AIG became the largest insurance and financial services company in the world. In 1990, Mr. Greenberg was appointed by Mr. Zhu Rongji, then Mayor of Shanghai, to be the first Chairman of the International Business Leaders’ Advisory Council for the Mayor of Shanghai. In 1994, Mr. Greenberg was appointed Senior Economic Advisor to the Beijing Municipal Government. He was awarded “Honorary Citizen of Shanghai” in 1997. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Tsinghua School of Economics and Management, the International Advisory Council of the China Development Research Foundation, and the China Development Bank. Mr. Greenberg also founded the Starr Foundation, which has accumulatively contributed more than 260 million dollars to different charitable and educational
projects in China.
