BROAD Sustainable Building (BSB) through their U.S. arm BROAD U.S.A., has been awarded the Tall Excellence Innovation Award for Prefabricated Stainless Steel building, in the “Awards of Excellence” at the CTBUH “Tall Excellence” International Conference in Chicago.

The CTBUH Awards program honors projects that have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment, and that achieve sustainability at the highest and broadest level. The judging of this award is based on demonstrating innovation in comparison to standard benchmarks. The key criteria include:

-The project must clearly demonstrate a specific area of innovation within building design and/or construction that is new and pushes the design of tall buildings to a higher level.

-The area of innovation should demonstrate an element of adaptability that would allow it to influence future tall building design, construction, or operation in a positive way.

The BROAD Holon building is a technological breakthrough in speed of construction and shortened project cycle, building service life, and energy efficiency. BROAD pioneered the use of stainless steel in fully prefabricated buildings, which includes the company’s original “B-CORE Slab” sandwich structure stainless steel material that is hardened through a patented hot air copper brazing process which makes it stronger yet lighter than carbon steel, and is 10 x lighter than reinforced concrete of the same design strength.

The “Holon Building” has four distinct innovations:

-Stainless steel is 100% recyclable and therefore environmentally friendly. It is non-corrosive which provides an almost unlimited service life, and it is extremely durable and can tolerate load shifts such as seismic events.

-The Holon Building is equipped with BROAD’s original energy recover ventilation to bring 100% outdoor air into the indoor space, filtering 99.9% of PM2.5 and using an air to air energy recovert to avoid increasing cooling or heating loads.

-Holon Building uses highly effective rock wool thermal insulation, 3 or 4 paned windows, automaticed sun and thermal shades, and an LED lighting system which reduce energy consumption up to 80% compared with traditional buildings.

-Fourth, the building type and room layout are extremely flexible and can be reconfigured, and floors can even be added after construction is completed.

Javier Quintana, CEO of CTBUH, stated “BROAD is developing new technologies specific to the new challenges of high-rise buildings, and have brought a solution based on stainless steel for a building put together out of a modular system to not only be built in record time, but even has the ability to be dismantled and then be transferred to another site, that is what is absolutely remarkable.”

Sunny Wang, General Manager of BROAD U.S.A., commented “this prestigious award is a recognition of the efficacy of stainless steel in building construction, and in BROAD’s 100% off-site construction of the building which assures high quality and a guaranteed delivery schedule. This construction method can add new housing units quickly and at low cost, which will alleviate the critical housing shortage in the US and worldwide.”
