New York City, September 6, 2018 – China General Chamber of Commerce – USA (CGCC), CGCC Foundation and Fosun International Limited jointly held the “A Centenary Story of C.V. Starr & Co: China and the US in 2018 and Beyond” Dialogue and Private Screening of “Better Angels” event at 28 Liberty in New York. Maurice Greenberg, Chairman
Bo Wei, Vice President of Fosun Hive Holdings, Chief Executive Representative of Fosun International New York Office, delivered welcoming remarks.
Xu Chen, Chairman of CGCC, President and CEO of Bank of China USA, delivered opening remarks. “CGCC’s mission is to connect people, build trust and expand cooperation between US and Chinese business communities. I firmly believe that we will continue to innovate, build and create long-lasting bond between our business and our people”, said Xu.
Following Xu’s remarks, William Mundell, Producer of the documentary “Better Angels”, introduced the film and its background story. “By looking through the lenses of ordinary Chinese and ordinary Americans who are seeking to bridge the physical and metaphysical distance that divides us, this film I think makes a major down payment for shattering the myth that Americans have about China and China about America,” said Mundell.
After Mundell’s remarks, LEADERS Magazine’s David Schner sat down with Chairman and CEO of C.V. Starr & Co. Maurice Greenberg to discuss the legacy of C.V. Starr and Co. in China as well as the current state of China-US relations. Mr. Greenberg recalled how Starr started his business venture in China after World War I and commented on the current US-China trade war, “I hope President Xi and President Trump can solve the trade disputes in front of the two countries in the next meeting.”
The event concluded with a private screening of the documentary “Better Angels”. Directed by two-time Oscar-winning director, Malcom Clarke, the documentary focuses on the lives of various entrepreneurs and ordinary people from all walks of life whose day-to-day activities are influenced by the China-US relationship. The film also interviewed several prominent Chinese and American scholars and politicians, including Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, James Baker, Madeleine Albright, Former Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China and Economist Cheng Siwei, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Tung Chee-hwa and many more. Highlighted in the film is the success of CGCC member company Golden Dragon Precise Copper Tube Group in its operation in Alabama, creating lots of jobs for the local community.
Through this series of dialogue and documentary film screenings, CGCC aim to generate conversations on China-US relations, promote mutual understanding, and strengthen the cooperation between US and Chinese business communities.
